Boy, 15, found dead and 14-year-old fighting for life after struggling to swim in river – Chron

The body of a 15-year-old boy was found dead in a river while a 14-year-old fights for his life after a group of friends got into trouble while swimming last night.

A search team was tasked with finding the teenager after rescue workers were alerted to the incident, which took place at 6.41pm in the River Eden in Carlisle.

Four teenagers were involved in Cumbria Fire and Rescue airlifting a 14-year-old boy who was said to be in critical condition. Two other teenagers were also examined by medical experts.

The fire service also announced that one of the youths managed to swim to safety while another was rescued safely by a member of the public.

No official identification has yet been confirmed, but the 15-year-old’s family have been informed. They are supported by professionals.

A file is created for the coroner.

Cumbria Constabulary Chief Superintendent Lisa Hogan said: “This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family of the 15-year-old boy at this difficult time.”

“An extensive search operation has been carried out since the incident was reported last night. The search activity was supported by ambulance services, search and rescue teams and specialist search experts from Cumbria and outside the county.

The incident came during the hottest weekend of the year so far, as temperatures hit the high teens and early 20s across the UK.
