#BoycottSephora: The cosmetics brand is at the center of a controversy in France

The cosmetics brand Sephora has been in the sights of several French Internet users since it decided to highlight the group Les Hijabeuses in a promotional video broadcast on its Instagram page on Monday.

Founded in 2020, the collective aims to defend the right of football players to wear a veil in major competitions.

The latter has been particularly active since, on June 29, the French Council of State upheld the ban on wearing the veil in competitions imposed by the French Football Federation.

The organization justified its regulations by citing one of its regulations that prohibits “any wearing of signs or clothing that purports to express a political, philosophical, religious or trade union affiliation,” as well as “any proselytizing or propaganda maneuvers.”

In the caption that accompanies the video on the Sephora France Instagram account, we can read that Les Hijabeuses are “committed to transcending oneself, to team spirit, fighting spirit and inclusion.”

“We followed her, from her beauty routine to the soccer field. “This is also “The Unlimited Power of Beauty,” the brand concludes in its message.

Many Internet users condemned the campaign on the social network X with the hashtag #BoycottSephora. The latter managed to hit the trends of the social network on Tuesday.

“I am systematically boycotting brands that trivialize the Islamic veil by using it as an advertising tool,” said one internet user. Others condemn the reaction of some X users, accusing them of an Islamophobic motivation.

“So sad the mentality of this country today,” another user wrote.

A decision by the State Council helped fuel passions online.

“The government cannot allow Sephora to openly disregard a decision of the State Council,” wrote a user on the social network X.

The Hijabeuses criticized the Supreme Court’s decision, saying it had caved “in the face of political and media pressure.”
