A complaint against Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal was filed with Orlando police on March 22 over a post-game incident involving a fan who claimed to have lost a bet, according to police documents obtained by ESPN.
After a 122-112 road loss to the Orlando Magic at the Amway Center last Tuesday, Beal and the Wizards were leaving court and heading to the locker room in the visitors’ tunnel when, according to the police report, an unidentified man remarked to Beal: “You made me Losing $1300, you F—.”
According to the report, Beal turned and walked up to a friend of the man who made the remark and hit him with his right hand, knocking off the man’s hat and touching the left side of his head.
Police reviewed video footage of the altercation and heard Beal say it was his job and he took it seriously, and the man apologized, implying he had no intention of offending him, according to the report.
The complaint said that “there is a probable cause for charging Beal with a simple battery” and that charges will be filed with the prosecutor. No charges had been filed as of Tuesday morning.
ESPN has reached out to the Wizards and the NBA for comment.
Legal sports betting has spread across the country in the last five years. Thirty-three states have created betting markets since 2018, when the United States Supreme Court invalidated a federal law that had restricted regulated sports betting for 26 years, primarily in Nevada. Florida currently has no legal betting market.
