A German shepherd who managed to kill eight coyotes while guarding his flock of sheep and goats is recovering from injuries sustained during the confrontation.
The dog, named Casper, works on John Wierwiller’s farm in Georgia and managed to keep the coyotes at bay in a fight that lasted more than half an hour.
After the dogfight, Casper suddenly seemed to have disappeared for two days.
“We knew he was injured because we found parts of his tail and blood and other things, so we were concerned,” Wierwiller told WAGA.

Eventually, Casper returned with clearly visible injuries. The dog had gaping wounds on its neck and side.
“He was kind of looking at me like, ‘Boss, stop caring about how bad I look, just take care of me,'” Wierwiller explained. “It looked like a coyote grabbed its skin and immediately peeled it off.”
The LifeLine Animal Project, an organization with a mission to end the euthanasia of healthy animals, stepped in to raise money to cover all of Casper’s hospital bills and managed to generate $15,000.
The German shepherd is still being cared for by vets from the organization more than a month after the attack.
“He was kind of looking at me like, ‘Boss, stop caring about how bad I look, just take care of me,'” explained John Wierwiller. “It looked like a coyote grabbed its skin and immediately peeled it off.”

“I can’t even explain how good it is to see him now because I felt like there was no way he was alive when I saw him[after the attack],” Weirville told WBTV.
The Atlanta Coyote Project, which monitors animal movements in the area, says that while it’s common to see migrating coyotes, rarely do so many walk together in a pack.
“This is extremely unusual behavior for coyotes, and we suspect there may be extenuating circumstances,” said Chris Mowry, a professor of biology at Berry College.
“In this particular situation, the only thing that makes sense is if there was a big litter this year and the puppies haven’t spread yet. This could potentially make sense when a lot of resources are available, which sounds like it could be the case in this Decatur area,” Mowry said.
Casper will remain in the care of LifeLine Animal Project for a few more weeks before he is allowed to return home.
