The United Nations General Assembly (U.N.) adopted a resolution this Wednesday (12). Condemnation of “the illegal annexation” by Russia from four Ukrainian territories announced by Vladimir Putin two weeks ago. Brazil, which abstained from voting on the war in the eastern European country, voted for conviction.
The text, presented by Albania and Ukraine and supported by around 70 nations, was accepted with a large majority — 143 votes to five. Only Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Nicaragua and Syria opposed the decision. China, Bolivia, Algeria, Pakistan, Honduras and Mali abstained.
Prior to this vote, Brazil had a neutral positioning about the conflict. According to the Uol portal, Itamaraty believes that the Western powers’ efforts to isolate Moscow are only exacerbating the crisis and cutting off relevant communication channels to seek a peace deal. However, the attitude of the Brazilian government considered in favor of Putin by Europeans and Americans.
Last week, Brazil abstained in the vote to create a human rights monitoring mechanism in Russia.
What does the resolution support?
The resolution entitled “Territorial Integrity of Ukraine: Upholding the Principles of the Charter of the United Nations” states that “unlawful acts (in relation to those carried out by Russia on 23 have no validity in no way, nor do they serve to change in any way the status of these regions in Ukraine”.
In this sense, the text requires that states, international organizations and specialized UN agencies “recognize no change in the status” of these regions and demands that Russia “immediately and unconditionally revoke its decisions” as they “constitute an infringement of the territory and sovereignty of Ukraine and are incompatible with the principles of the Charter of the United Nations.”
The resolution also calls on Russia to “immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw all armed forces from the territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders”.
That is third loss inflicted on Russia at the United Nations by the international community since the country invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, and coincides with a further escalation of indiscriminate bombings of civilians and Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure.
