A particularly violent and unexpected act occurred when the results of an LGBTQI+ beauty pageant organized in Brazil at the end of May were announced. A man, unhappy that his wife came second in the Miss Gay Mato Grosso 2023 pageant, took the stage. He took the tiara from the newly-elected beauty queen’s head and threw it on the ground, Le Parisien reported on Tuesday.
Emanuelly Belini, a native of the town of Várzea Grande, barely had time to rejoice and feel the weight of the crown on his head before it was forcibly taken from him. The video made the rounds on Brazil’s social networks, causing hilarity or outrage among netizens.
A complaint from the organizers
After smashing and finally destroying the tiara twice, the man grabbed his wife, runner-up Natally Becker. The angry husband was then forcibly ushered backstage by staff, not without resistance.
The organizers of the competition reacted quickly. In an Instagram post, they reiterated their support for the winner and said they would sue the man: “We strongly condemn the stage invasion and aggressive destruction of the crown,” they wrote.
