Brazil: investigation into the genocide of indigenous Yanomami peoples ANSA news agency

(ANSA) — SAN PAULO, JAN 22 — Minister of Justice and Public Security Flavio Dino (Psb) has ordered the opening of an investigation into alleged genocidal and environmental crimes in the region of the Yanomami people in the state of Roraima.

Yesterday President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva traveled to Roraima to address the plight of the indigenous people affected by a very serious health, food and environmental crisis, largely caused by the invasion of garimpeiros, illegal miners and prospectors favored by the political initiatives of the Bolsonaro government.

Lula, who signed a decree establishing a national coordination committee that has 90 days to discuss measures to support the Yanomami, was joined by Dino and Minister for Indigenous Peoples Sonia Guajajara.

The Ministry of Health declared a public health emergency of national importance on Friday. (HAND).
