Brazil is the only country in the Americas invited to the Arab Summit on the Gaza Crisis

The Egyptian government invited President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and the Brazilian government to attend a summit this weekend to discuss the situation of the crisis in the Gaza Strip. The meeting will take place next Saturday (October 21) in Cairo and will include the participation of the main leaders of Arab countries in the region such as Qatar, Iraq, Turkey and Jordan.

However, President Lula, who is still recovering from hip surgery at the end of September, cannot attend the meeting. Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira will also not be able to attend. He is traveling back to New York this Wednesday (October 18th), where he will again take command of the United Nations (UN) Security Council, whose presidency the country will hold on a rotating basis until the end of the month.

“I will be busy presiding over the UN Security Council in New York,” said Vieira, explaining his absence from the Egyptian meeting.

Without Lula and Vieira, one of the options is to send the special adviser for international affairs, Ambassador Celso Amorim, to Cairo next Saturday.

In addition to Brazil, Spain, which holds the rotating presidency of the European Union, was also invited from outside the region. Egypt would also have discussed the possibility of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni attending.
