Due to temperatures over 40 degrees Ricinha – the largest favela in Brazil, located in the southern part of Rio de Janeiro – I have been without power for 8 days. Thousands of consumers were harmed by the service outage, and Rio’s ombudsman filed a lawsuit a collective action to demand their rights. “In a situation of extreme heat, leaving the people of the Rocinha community without light for so many days is a disaster inhumane treatment towards a vulnerable population,” said the coordinator of the unit specializing in consumer protection (Nudecon), Eduardo Chow de Martino Tostes.
