Terrible Sunday in the history of Brazil. Hundreds of supporters of far-right ex-president Jair Bolsonaro stormed into the presidential palace, Congress and the Supreme Court in Três Poderes Square in Brasília on Sunday night in a political coup attempt after Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s victory in the last presidential election last November. After these riots, the police recorded more than 1,200 arrests. However, a problem arises on the side of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), since these “terrorists and vandals”, as the national press dubbed them, wore the Seleção shirt. The CBF is therefore in a delicate situation, close to being uncomfortable with the use of the Brazilian national team’s jersey. A national symbol that has been hijacked many times over the past four years by Bolsonaro and his fervent voters.

According to information from the Brazilian media UOL, the association, which will also launch educational and social campaigns, intends to meet with representatives of the largest sports outfitter Nike to discuss the issue. The company’s new president, Ednaldo Rodrigues, wants to speak to the American brand to see what can be done. He intends to listen to designers and developers for a possible change. Brazil wore white until the 1950 World Cup, when they lost the final in the Maracanã, and has worn the yellow jersey out of superstition since the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland: “The national jersey of the Brazilian flag is a symbol of the joy of our people. It should cheer up, vibrate and love the country. The CBF is a non-partisan and democratic institution. We recommend using the jersey to unite and not separate Brazilians. The company vehemently denies that our shirt is used for undemocratic acts and vandalism.”
