Brazilian President Lula da Silva arrives in Brussels for the CELAC EU Summit

The Brazilian press claims that there will be no significant progress on the economic agreement at this summit. Although a meeting between Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is planned, it will be a symbolic meeting.

Brazil has recently completed the drafting of a letter that will be the answer to European environmental demands and must first be sent to the EU via the Mercosur partner countries. According to Brazilian sources, this action will continue for several weeks.

Strengthening of relations between Europe and Latin America

For this reason, the issues to be discussed during the summit would focus on strengthening ties between European and Latin American countries. Lula expects to play an important role as his return to the Brazilian presidency has brought a new dimension to regional politics and relations between the 32 countries that make up the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.

During the CELAC-EU meeting, Lula wants to address the situation in Nicaragua. Pope Francis asked him to speak to President Daniel Ortega to release religious leaders imprisoned by the regime.
