(CNN Spanish) – The President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, pardoned a group of prisoners who met certain conditions, such as those with sentences of less than eight years, who had already served a quarter of their sentence, and those who were resentenced Criminals were required to serve a third of their sentence.
As published in the official newspaper on Friday, the President also granted a collective pardon by the prisoner to prisoners who were over 60 years old and had served a third of their sentence, as well as to women with minor children who were deprived of their liberty Presidents with chronic illnesses. What all of these pardoners had in common was that they had not committed any violent crimes.
As with every time this pardon is granted, there are exceptions. This year, the decree excluded prisoners convicted of crimes against the democratic state and specifically targeted a group of 30 prisoners involved in the attempted coup on January 8 this year.
This pardon process is traditional for the Christmas season and those who benefit from it will have their freedom immediately restored.
