BREAKING: Las Vegas will be the venue for the Formula 1 night race from 2023

The world-famous neon lights of Las Vegas provide the backdrop for Formula 1’s latest race when the American city hosts a nighttime event from 2023.

The Las Vegas Grand Prix will be held on a Saturday next November and is one of three races in the United States, joining Miami and Austin.

Las Vegas hosted races in 1981 and 1982, but this will be the first time F1 cars have raced on the iconic Las Vegas Strip, with the route passing famous hotels and casinos.

The 14-turn track will be 6.12 km (3.8 miles) long, with top speeds expected of 342 km/h (212 mph).

The design features three straights, a fast corner sequence and a single chicane, with the Grand Prix being run over 50 laps.

F1 and Liberty Media will work together to promote the race in partnership with Live Nation Entertainment and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA), as well as founding partners Caesars Entertainment, MGM Resorts International and Wynn Las Vegas and presenting partners MSG Sphere, Resorts World Las Vegas and The Venetian Resort.

The news was announced at a glamorous event in Las Vegas on Wednesday night, in the presence of Greg Maffei, President and CEO of Liberty Media, and Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of F1.

They were joined by local stakeholders including Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak, LVCVA CEO and President Steve Hill, and Live Nation Entertainment President and CEO Michael Rapino.

“The legendary Las Vegas and Formula 1, the pinnacle of motorsport, are the perfect combination of speed and glamour,” said Maffei. “Our confidence in this unique opportunity is reflected in our decision to take on the role of promoter of the Las Vegas Grand Prix in partnership with Live Nation.

“We couldn’t be more excited to be working with our local partners to create a marquee event. The potential of Formula 1 has been well demonstrated in recent seasons and the Las Vegas GP will only take it to the next level.”

Domenicali added: “This is an incredible moment for Formula 1, showing the tremendous appeal and growth of our sport with a third race in the United States. Las Vegas is a destination known around the world for its excitement, hospitality, thrills and of course the famous Strip.

“There is no better place for Formula 1 racing than the global entertainment capital of the world and we can’t wait to be there next year. I would like to thank everyone who helped make this event possible, especially Governor Sisolak, the Clark County Commission, Steve Hill of the LVCVA and our local partners.”
