The scene in The Mummy where Brendan almost choked Fraser

“I was on tiptoe with the noose around my neck and the director Stefan Sommer he came running and told me: “Hey, it doesn’t look like you’re really choking”‘ he began to talk, adding that he still had to make an effort beforehand. Okay, well, one more shot, he recalled thinking at the time.

Moments later the set was set up and the scene was retaken, but this time trying to make it look more realistic.

“The guy holding the rope over me pushed a little higher and I was on my toes,” Fraser continued, but eventually it was held aloft while still being lifted, and therefore had no chance to move.

It was there when he lost consciousness: “My elbow was in my ear, the world was on its side, there was gravel in my teeth and everyone was very quiet”.

After a few minutes, the actor came to and was surprised by a statement from Sommer that to this day he can’t remember without laughing: “Congratulations, you’re in the club. The same thing happened to Mel Gibson in ‘brave heart‘”the director told him while putting him on the list of those who fainted during a shoot.

Years ago, in 1999, he had committed himself to it David Letterman that in this scene “Technically, I died. A doctor told me that for 12 or 14 seconds.”.

However, this episode was not the first of its kind in his career. One of Hollywood’s biggest stars of the ’90s and consistently topping the charts of leading men, he used his body to impersonate characters of all kinds throughout his years in front of the camera.

This caused him to gain and lose weight for certain roles and even suffered from one short memory loss after becoming too hungry in his attempt to achieve the statuesque physique of “George of the Jungle”. He trained for an additional eight months.
