Bride makes grandma cry by wearing her 1970s court dress to wedding rehearsal: ‘So cute’

A bride-to-be shocked her family by wearing her grandmother’s 1972 court dress to her wedding rehearsal, and now the touching Something Old, Something New shots are going viral.

TikToker Maggy Meitzler (@maggymeitzler) gained over 1.6 million views, 246,000 likes, 4,3000 likes and 3,500 comments when she uploaded the emotional video to her account.

Maggy isn’t the first bride to give pride of place to a special family heirloom on her big day. Lately we’ve been observing a trend where moms and grandmothers’ old wedding dresses are being cleared from storage to become modern day trial dresses – a trend that’s growing in popularity with every viral TikTok.

Maggy’s video, titled “The best surprise I’ve ever pulled off,” begins with a shot of her family and friends waiting for the rehearsal to begin.

“I surprised my grandparents by wearing my grandmother’s 51-year-old court wedding dress to my wedding rehearsal,” Maggy’s video reads.

As Maggy walks down the aisle arm in arm with her father, the congregation stands up and turns around. As soon as Maggy’s grandmother sees the dress, she puts her face in her hands and turns away, clearly overwhelmed with emotion.

To TikTok’s delight, Maggy’s grandma then reaches out to her husband to make sure he recognizes the dress. “I love that grandma reaches out to grandpa to remind him that this was her dress from her time,” wrote user @colorfulshoes.

Later in the video, Maggy holds a photo of her grandparents on their wedding day. Her grandmother can be seen in the photo in the same red dress – which has obviously held up very well over the years.

According to Minted, the average courthouse or city hall wedding costs between $20 and $50 (the license costs an additional $40 to $100). Considering the average US wedding currently costs $30,000, it’s no wonder so many couples opt for a simple court ceremony.

While Maggy’s grandmother would have said yes at City Hall in 1972, Maggy and her fiancé Matthew opted for a traditional wedding ceremony – footage of which she later shared on TikTok.

The story goes on

According to the 3,500 emotional comments, Maggy’s sweet surprise seems to have touched more hearts than just her grandparents.

“Thanks for making me cry at 7:38!! So cute!!” wrote @savannahrose552.

“Grandma’s reaction was everything,” commented @robymari1.

“Omgggg her reaction!!! 🥹🥹 Grandparents are so special 🤍🤍,” wrote @mollyjcurley.

“Um, can we talk about how iconic this dress is?!” commented @emelize28.

Hopefully this upcycled clothing trend will bring out even more vintage treasures from the closets of the older generation!
