Bridgerton actress Ruby Barker slams Netflix for ‘not making contact’ with her when she suffered two psychotic breaks

Bridgerton’s Ruby Barker has slammed Netflix after claiming the streaming site “didn’t make contact with her” when she was hospitalized after filming the series.

The 26-year-old actress played Marina Thompson in the first season of the modernized period drama and has been open about her mental health struggles in the past.

Ruby said candidly on the LOAF podcast on Saturday that she suffered two psychotic breaks – one shortly after filming wrapped in 2019 and another in 2022.

She claimed that she received “no support” from Netflix during her difficulties and that there was no “aftercare” even during the sudden rise to fame.

Ruby said: “When I went to hospital a week after filming the first season of Bridgerton, everything was really covered up and kept secret because the show was coming out.

“During filming, my condition worsened. It was a really torturous place for me because my character was very alienated, very excluded and on his own in these terrible circumstances.

“Not a single person from Netflix, not a single person from Shondaland, since I had two psychotic breaks from this show, has even contacted me or emailed me to ask if I’m OK or if I’m of any kind would benefit from follow-up care.” Support. No one.’

Ruby’s character, Marina, unexpectedly becomes pregnant while staying with her distant cousins, the Featheringtons, who treat her with disdain.

Marina also attracts the attention of Colin Bridgerton and fuels the jealousy of Penelope Featherington, who has long had a crush on him.

The How To Stop A Recurring Dream actress added that her difficulties continued even a year after filming when the series came out.

She explained that she felt pressure to appear “bubbly” in keeping with the show’s atmosphere, and stated that it felt like an “invisible gun” was being held to her head.

Ruby continued: “In the lead up to the show’s release, I had just gotten out of hospital, my Instagram followers were growing, I had all these commitments to attend to.”

“My life changed drastically overnight and yet there was still no support and there was still no support all the time.” So I really tried to pretend everything was fine, I could work and it be no problem.

Hart: She captioned the post: “Mental Health Week is every week for me.” Off my chest. I feel like I haven’t been completely honest, so this is for my followers.

“It’s almost like I have this metaphorical invisible gun to my head to sell this show because this show is bubbly and fun. ‘I don’t want to come out and fiddle about it because then I might never work again!’

A psychotic breakdown occurs when a person begins to lose touch with reality due to a decline in their mental health.

It can be a sign of illness or a reaction to a traumatic event. Symptoms may include hallucinations, delusions, and confused thoughts.

Web has contacted Netflix for comment.

In May last year, Ruby revealed she was taking a “bit of a break” after being hospitalized during her “mental battle.”

The actress said she has had “struggles since Bridgerton” but is now looking forward to “moving on with her life.”

Taking to Instagram, Ruby addressed her followers in the candid clip, thanking her fans and family for their support and Netflix for the “rescue.”

‘I’m going to give myself a little break’: Bridgerton’s Ruby Barker revealed her mental health struggle in an Instagram post last year

She began: “I’m feeling better, I’ve been really bad for a long time.” I want to be honest with everyone. I fought.

“I am in hospital at the moment and will be discharged soon and hopefully I can move on with my life.”

“I’m going to give myself a little break and I want to encourage others: If you’re struggling, do yourself a favor and take a break, stop being so hard on yourself.”

She further explained her feelings: “I was full of anger, angry, all this intergenerational trauma concentrated inside me.”

“I carried the weight of the world on my back and now I’m at the point where I have a diagnosis, I’m drawing a line in the sand.”

“I can’t carry on as before, I have to change, so I’m trying. ‘I want to survive and I will survive, I will do it.’

Ruby ended the video by thanking her friends and family, as well as streaming service Netflix, for giving her a chance and “saving her.”

She captioned the post: “Mental Health Week is every week for me.” From my chest. I feel like I haven’t been completely honest, so this is for my followers. Time to be transparent.

“I’ve been struggling since Bridgerton, that’s the truth.” Thank you all for supporting me, your love keeps me going. #mentalhealthawareness.’
