Bridgerton season 2 tops season 1 in Netflix TV rankings

Everyone salutes the viscount. The second season of Bridgerton has knocked out the show’s first season as number one on Netflix’s list of the most popular English-language television series of all time.

On Tuesday, Netflix announced via its weekly top 10 that “Bridgerton” season 2 had watched 627.11 million hours since its March 25 launch on April 17.

“After four weeks at the top of the English TV List, Lady Whistledown is delighted to announce that ‘Bridgerton’ Season 2 has risen to number one on the most popular list with 627.11 million hours, ahead of ‘Bridgerton’ Season 1 in second place,” Netflix said. “This is the first-ever series to earn both first and second place on a Most Popular list. This week season 2 has been watched for 66.61 million hours and appeared in the top 10 in 88 countries.”

Created by Chris Van Dusen and produced by Shonda Rhimes, Season 1 of Bridgerton was viewed 625.49 million hours on Netflix in the first 28 days. This is the metric the streaming service uses to calculate its “Most Popular” lists. This put the first season of Bridgerton firmly at the top of English-language TV titles, but still well behind the winner of non-English-language series Squid Game, which had watched 1.65 billion hours in its first 28 days.

The second season of Bridgerton famously shifted the focus from the leading couple in season 1, Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) and Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page), to Daphne’s eldest brother Anthony (Jonathan Bailey) and his romantic interest Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley) in Season 2. While Dynevor reprized her role for Season 2 and discussed her now-husband Simon being off-screen with their baby Augie, Page left the show as a series regular prior to Season 2 and did not appear in any of the episodes.

Bridgerton has already been renewed for seasons three and four on Netflix, with the streaming service confirming plans to expand on additional storylines from Julia Quinn’s romance series of the same name.

Check out Netflix’s top 10 ranking below for the week of April 11-17, starting with English language TV series, followed by non-English language shows, and then English language films and non-English language films.
