British animal rights activists protest outside London’s Salt Bae steakhouse

A group of animal rights and climate justice activists tried to take a seat at London steakhouse Nusr-Et, owned by social media personality Salt Bae, but were removed by staff at the upscale restaurant on Saturday night.

Animal Rebellion said they staged the protest because “luxury dining represents exploitation, climate destruction and inequality”.

The protesters sat down at tables with a menu titled “Plant Based Future,” which includes “support for farmers and fishing communities in the transition to a plant-based food system” and “rewilding of vacated land and sea.”

Nusr-Et is owned by Nusret Gökçe, who has exploded on social media in recent years with his viral videos of gold-plated steaks and other extravagant dishes. The chain has locations in at least 18 cities around the world.

Nusr-Et did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Animal Rebellion also held a sit-in protest at Mana, another upscale London restaurant that offers a full dinner menu for around $230 per person.

Simon Martin, the chef and owner of Mana, said in a statement he was “confused about why the protesters chose to target a restaurant that prioritizes sustainability and animal welfare”.

“Last night’s protest at Mana disrupted the operations of a small business that has already suffered economically from COVID and the ongoing energy crisis on the busiest night of the week,” Martin said in a statement shared with Fox News Digital.

“Mana has always been a highly sustainable restaurant, sourcing hyper-local and sustainably produced vegetables from small businesses like us that are non-GMO, non-GMO, non-herbicides and non-pesticides.”

Animal Rebellion said some of the protesters in Mana were arrested.

“We call on the government to help farmers transition to a plant-based future,” Animal Rebellion tweeted. “We now urgently need measures against the climate crisis!”
