A British Columbia activist campaigning for a relaxation of drug laws sent his province's 87 MPs a rather unexpected gift: magic mushrooms and a coca leaf.
As unlikely as it may seem, that's exactly what Dana Larsen did to spark a discussion about the “ridiculousness” of anti-drug legislation. The latter also specified in a letter attached to the packages that the Golden Teacher – the type of mushroom he sent – was generally used for its “beneficial therapeutic properties”.
“Unfortunately, possession of even one gram of this mushroom is still considered a criminal offense in Canada,” he wrote, according to the Vancouver Sun.
According to Surrey South MP and former Royal Canadian Mounted Police member Elenore Sturko, this unacceptable situation should be treated like drug trafficking. When she realized the contents of the package, the ex-cop quickly contacted Vancouver police.
“The outrage I feel is that by taking these substances I am coming into contact with something that could have played a role in gang activity,” she told local media, indicating that they were products of South American cartels could act.
“Maybe it played a role in killing someone and I don't like that,” she added.
