British Open 2023 Leaderboard: Live Coverage, Rory McIlroy Score, Golf Scores Today Round 1 – CBS Sports

The 151st Open Championship, billed as the final Major of the year, got underway Thursday morning in Hoylake, England, while many across the United States were still sound asleep. Local hero Matthew Jordan kicked off the event as Royal Liverpool hosted an Open full of history and a 156-strong field for the first time since 2014.

PGA Championship winner Brooks Koepka is among the first big names to get going in Round 1. The five-time major champion has an opportunity to secure his second multi-major season should he surge the Claret Jug. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler puts his 18-tournament streak of top-12 finishes to the test in Hoylake. Scheffler is experiencing one of the greatest statistical seasons of modern times and wants to put the finishing touches on his campaign with the Major number 2.

Champion Golfer of the Year Cameron Smith is aiming to become the Claret Jug’s first successful defender since Padraig Harrington in 2007-08, while Rickie Fowler, Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele aim for their first major tournament. But there is no bigger name in the running than the world’s second-best golfer, Rory McIlroy, going straight into the game with a win at the Scottish Open. Nine years after his Hoylake Open win, the four-time Major champion returns in search of his fifth alongside fellow Europeans Jon Rahm and Justin Rose.
