British police arrest terror suspect who escaped from London prison

A former soldier accused of terrorism who was on the run from a London jail where he was awaiting trial was arrested today, police said.

Daniel Abed Khalife, 21, was on the run for four days until an intensive search managed to catch him in Chiswick, west London. According to The Guardian newspaper, 150 antiterrorist agents were involved, and ports and airports were on alert and under close surveillance.

Khalife escaped from Wandsworth Prison under a food delivery van on Wednesday. The escape triggered a wave of criticism, with political opponents accusing the ruling conservative party of incompetence.

Khalife is accused of planting fake bombs at a military base and breaching Britain’s Official Secrets Act by gathering information “that could be useful to an enemy”.

He was discharged from the British Army after his arrest earlier this year and had denied the allegations. His trial is scheduled for November.

London’s antiterror police offered a reward of 20,000 pounds (around 23,000 euros) for information leading to his arrest.
