British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood has died on Thursday, December 29, aged 81, the brand she founded announced on social media. She died “peacefully” surrounded by her family in south London.

The stylist’s career began in the heart of the punk movement in the 1970s, when her radical take on street style turned the world upside down. It was the beginning of a long career marked by several triumphant parades in London, Paris, Milan and New York.

As she grew, she seemed to transcend fashion with designs exhibited in museums around the world. The young woman who had despised the British establishment eventually became one of its figureheads.

In addition, Vivienne Westwood has also helped shake up the music world. Craftsmen of the British punk movement, the Sex Pistols formed out of his clothing store in London – dubbed “SEX” – under the direction of their manager, Malcolm McLaren, Vivienne Westwood’s husband.
