Brooks Koepka won the PGA Championship for a third time Sunday, earning his fifth major title at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York.

In a commanding final-round performance, the American finished nine under par, two shots clear of compatriot Scottie Scheffler and Norway’s Viktor Hovland, who played his part in a thrilling duel on the final day.

The 33-year-old’s triumph makes him the first golfer to win a major tournament at the LIV Golf Series. Australia’s Cameron Smith joined the Saudi-backed breakaway a month after his July 2022 Open Championship win.

It marks the long-awaited return to the top for Koepka, who suffered an injury-related fall from the top between 2017 and 2019 after winning back-to-back PGA Championship and US Open cups in an unprecedented span of time.

Koepka narrowly missed out on winning the Masters last month, taking a two-shot lead on the final round before finishing second behind Spaniard Jon Rahm. However, he overcame difficult conditions before taking the lead from the front on the final day and claiming the Wanamaker Trophy.

He is only the third player, along with Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus, to win three or more PGA championships during the stroke play era.
