Brother André, 94 years old, died this Tuesday (27th), a Dutch evangelical who became known worldwide for smuggling Bibles into communist countries closed to the gospel.

God’s Smuggler, as he is known, is the name behind Open Doors, an international organization dedicated to helping the persecuted church around the world.

Her real name is Anne van der Bilj, but she adopted the name André as an alias to take the Word of God to unreached peoples.

Aboard a blue Volkswagen Beetle, the missionary had many of the adventures recounted in the 1967 book The Smuggler of God, which has sold more than 10 million copies and been translated into 40 languages.

Despite his virtuous work for persecuted Christians, Brother André never took credit for his work.

I’m just an ordinary guy. Anybody can do what I’ve done he said as he was treated like a hero.

He managed to get copies of the Bible to countries like Poland, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, East Germany, Bulgaria, and other Soviet bloc countries in the 1950s. The number of copies he distributed is unknown, but estimates run into the millions.

In addition to the countries of the former Soviet Union, the missionary traveled to many other nations. Total estimated 125 countries covering over 1 million miles.

65 YEARS OF OPEN DOORS
The Dutch missionary’s love for persecuted Christians led to Open Doors Mission, the oldest international ministry for persecuted Christians.

Open Doors celebrated its 65th anniversary in 2020 and today works in more than 60 countries. The mission has more than 1,400 employees worldwide with the aim of supporting and strengthening persecuted Christians and churches in countries where there is persecution.

Brother André leaves us an example of obedience to the Lord and his call. He was so obedient that he risked his own life many times. He spared no effort to heed God’s call and minister to persecuted Christians. As he himself said: “Of course it is dangerous, but disobeying God is even more dangerous. Security is not at stake at the Great Commission,” said Open Doors Brazil Secretary General Marco Cruz.
