Bruins’ message is clear to forgotten veteran amid ‘frustrating’ season – NESN

There are hundreds of words that could be used to describe the Boston Bruins’ season.

You could opt for “historic” as the Bruins rewrote the record books again with their dominant win over the Buffalo Sabers on Thursday night. Other options are Dominant, Funny, Unforeseen, or Incredible.

However, Mike Reilly would probably choose “frustrating.”

“I asked (Bruins CEO Don Sweeney) about Mike Reilly and his situation,” Ty Anderson of 98.5 The Sports Hub tweeted on Friday. “He admits that Reilly is frustrated with his situation but that he (Sweeney) has told him he’s ‘still part of the group’ and that injuries could bring him back to Boston from the AHL.”

Reilly, an eight-season veteran who traded to Boston at the 2021 NHL trade deadline, dropped out of the roster entirely and stayed with the Providence Bruins in the AHL for most of the season.

The 29-year-old has featured in just 10 games (one assist) for Boston all season and has been overlooked in head coach Jim Montgomery’s lineup by the likes of Derek Forbort, Brandon Carlo and Connor Clifton. The addition of Dmitry Orlov has made the road back to the NHL even more difficult for Reilly as the Bruins now use a steady rotation of seven defenders. Reilly is not one of them.

There was a thought that Reilly could trade before the 3pm Friday close, but ultimately nothing materialized. That means he must continue to serve as the Bruins’ second contingency option on defense, just as he has done all season.
