Bruins: Tyler Bertuzzi wouldn’t stay either

In a rather surprising turn of events, Boston Bruins forward Tyler Bertuzzi has reportedly decided to test the free-agent market this summer.

Sportsnet network reporter Elliotte Friedman reported Thursday night that the 28-year-old winger has opted to become a free agent starting July 1. His two-year contract, which has an average annual value of $4.75 million, is about to expire and the former Detroit Red Wings could be the subject of an escalation.

On Monday, the Bruins freed up space on their payroll — which many thought was destined for Bertuzzi — by sending Taylor Hall and Nick Foligno to the Chicago Blackhawks.

Boston would first try to figure out the future of veterans Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci, who could hang up their skates before wasting their available cash. Also defender Dmitry Orlov will achieve autonomy.

Bertuzzi was acquired on March 2 in exchange for a first-round pick in 2024 and a fourth-round pick in 2025 and has 16 points in 21 games in Massachusetts. He led the Bruins in playoff scoring – level with Brad Marchand – with 10 points in seven games.
