Rodrigo Santoro, Wagner Moura, Alice Braga and Seu Jorge are Brazilians who have starred in international films in recent decades. In 2023, new generation talent promises to bring Brazil back to Hollywood. This year’s releases “Blue Beetle”, “Ferrari” and “The Assassin” put Bruna Marquezine, Gabriel Leone and Sophie Charlotte in the global spotlight.
“Blue Beetle”
Bruna Marquezine is the new name in Hollywood. In DC’s latest superhero film, released on August 17, the Brazilian plays billionaire Jenny Kord.
In the plot, Jaime Reyes (Xolo Mariduea), a young man of Mexican descent, has to work as a cleaning lady to help his family who is about to be evicted. Jenny offers him a job and introduces him to an ancient relic of alien technology, the Scarab. By touching him, the boy awakens the Blue Beetle, who chooses him as his host.
As Jaime learns to deal with the superpowers he gains, he meets Jenny’s cold aunt Vicki Kord (Susan Sarandon), who is obsessed with the scarab. According to critics, Puerto Rican filmmaker Angel Manuel Soto’s film is unsurprising, but it does have the advantage of featuring DC’s first Latin American superhero.

Some portals praised Bruna Marquezine’s performance, but comments rated the chemistry between Jenny and Jaime as weak. In Brazil, the debut caused a great response on social media. The actress couldn’t post it on her official accounts due to the actors’ strike in Hollywood, but had the help of friends like Manu Gavassi, Sasha Meneghel and Enzo Celulari.
The film grossed R$21 million and brought more than 1 million people to cinemas across the country. Globally, “Besouro Azul” grossed $81.8 million and is expected to surpass $140 million.
