Bryan Tanaka confirmed "friendly separation" Mariah Carey after seven years with the singer

(CNN) – Everything Mariah Carey wanted for Christmas this year (as the song goes) apparently didn't include Bryan Tanaka.

On Tuesday, Tanaka, a dancer and creative director, shared on social media that he and the superstar singer had separated after seven years.

“It is with mixed emotions that I share this personal update on my amicable separation from Mariah Carey after seven extraordinary years together,” Tanaka wrote in a statement posted to his verified Instagram account. “Our decision to pursue different paths is mutual, and as we undertake these separate journeys, we do so with deep respect and an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the invaluable time we shared. The memories we created and the artistic collaboration will remain in my heart forever.”

Tanaka, 40, is a former backup dancer who was part of Carey's “The Adventures of Mimi Tour” in 2006. They reportedly started dating in 2016, broke up briefly the following year, and then got back together.

Tanaka had kind words for Carey in his statement.

“Mariah’s commitment to her family and commitment to her craft have inspired us on our journey together,” he wrote. “I want to express my love and appreciation for Mariah and her incredible children, whose warmth and kindness have enriched my life in ways that words cannot express.”

Tanaka also asked for “understanding, privacy and respect” during this “sensitive” time.

“The outpouring of love and support from fans has been a beam of strength and I am extremely grateful for the encouragement that continues to lift me up,” he wrote. “I am very excited to continue my journey, knowing that my passion for inspiration, dance and the creative arts will continue to resonate in the chapters to come.”

Tanaka's relationship with Carey was part of her 2016 reality show Mariah's World.

CNN has reached out to Carey's representatives for comment.
