Bundestag condemns Holodomor as genocide

The German Bundestag has officially recognized the famine in Ukraine that was deliberately provoked some 90 years ago as a genocide. In the evening, the deputies approved a joint motion by the traffic light coalition (SPD, FDP and Verdes) and the Trade Union faction by a large majority, in which there is talk of an “inhuman crime”. Up to four million people were victims of the Holodomor (“hunger murder”) in 1932 and 1933 in Ukraine alone.

The Soviet leadership’s struggle for control of peasants at the time merged with the suppression of the Ukrainian way of life, language and culture, the text says. “From today’s perspective, a historical-political classification as genocide is obvious. The German Bundestag shares this classification.”

Zelenskyy welcomes the conviction

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi expressly welcomed the decision. “This is a decision for justice, for truth,” Zelenskyy said in his video diary. “And this is a very important signal for many other countries in the world that Russian revanchism will not succeed in rewriting history.”
