Businessman Patrick Parker Walsh from Florida in the United States bought an island and used as part of the payment the equivalent of R40 million stolen from the federal Covid19 relief funds. For this crime he was sentenced to five and a half years in federal prison.

Sweetheart Island was purchased by the businessman and is located in Yankeetown, Florida. The property is more than 8,000 square meters. The information comes from the newspaper O Globo.

Patrick Walsh was the owner of AirSign, an aerial advertising company. In 2020, the company faced a critical scenario during the pandemic. The businessman then sent dozens of fraudulent requests for emergency aid to the American government.

According to the US Department of Justice, the businessman received $7.8 million between March 2020 and January 2021. Prosecutors in the case cited the purchase of Sweetheart Island, undisclosed “luxury items,” oil fields in Texas and a down payment on a home in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

In a court filing, Walsh’s lawyers said the businessman was driven by desperation. The owner of AirSign pleaded guilty in January this year and was sentenced to five and a half years in prison. In addition, he must sell the island and return the stolen amount.
