Last Friday the 24th Lima Alliance was approved by the Peruvian Football Association Disciplinary Commission (FPF) with the closure of its Alejandro Villanueva Stadium (Matute) for seven months and a fine of 20 UIT (approximately 100,000 soles). The sanction is in response to events in the 2023 Liga 1 final against Universitario, such as the failure of the pitch lights seconds after the end of the game.
One of those who invoked this measure taken by the disciplinary body against Alianza Lima was the former goalkeeper Leao Butron. The current head of the academies and franchises of the intimate club pointed out that it was a greater punishment compared to the punishment suffered by Universitario for the death of a person, in clear reference to the murder of Walter Oyarce in the Monumental Stadium in 2011.
As it will be recalled, Oyarce died after being thrown creams out of a box by fans at the end of the classic. “We are so important that many people talk about us and worry. Even more worrying is that in Peru, turning off the lights is the harshest punishment than murdering a person in a stadium. “Celebrate as you have throughout your history and blow out the candle to go.” , he wrote on his Twitter account.

Why did Matute’s lights go out in the Liga 1 final against Universitario?
A few days ago the administrator of Alianza Lima, Jose Sabogaladmitted in an interview that it was he who ordered the Victorian enclosure’s lights to be turned off “to prevent injuries and fewer deaths.”
“I recognize that the decision I made has impacted different audiences in different ways. I take responsibility for these actions. The main goal was to ensure people’s safety so that there were no injuries and fewer deaths. “That has been achieved,” he explained to Liga 1 Radio.
