Best Buy stores will stop selling DVDs and Blu-rays as early as 2024, a sign that digitalization is surpassing older technologies.
With the increasing popularity of online viewing platforms and the purchase of digital versions of films, all indications are that DVDs and Blu-Ray discs will soon become obsolete, as will VHS tapes.
According to a survey by Statista Consumer Insights, only 30% of Americans now watch movies on DVD or Blu-ray.
“To state the obvious, the way we watch movies and TV shows is very different today than it was a few decades ago. “This change gives us more space and opportunity to offer customers new and innovative technologies for them to explore, discover and enjoy,” a spokesperson for the retail chain told CBS MoneyWatch.
So after the holiday season, movies on CD will be removed from Best Buy shelves. However, video game discs remain available.
