The famous Moulin Rouge cabaret in Paris will celebrate its 135th anniversary in 2024. Over the years, the establishment has tried to maintain its values and still manages to attract large crowds.
His dancers, specialists in French cancan and known for their strong character, have not lost any of their flexibility. And yet the famous Paris cabaret Moulin Rouge on Boulevard de Clichy in Pigalle will celebrate its 135th anniversary in 2024. The extravagant and unconventional place has always been nicknamed the “Palace of Women”. “There was a desire to mix, to have diversity and social promiscuity, and that was wanted by the establishment,” explains Delphine Foch, a historian specializing in the Moulin Rouge.
600,000 viewers per year
Citizens, workers, artists and aristocrats cavort within the walls of the cabaret. What brings them together: dancers who offer a “tingle of petticoats” and “that underwear that we weren’t used to back then,” the historian specifies. Even today, each painting requires hundreds of hours of rehearsal. Moulin Rouge's artistic director, Janet Pharaoh, recruits her dancers from all over the world. A selection that is worthwhile: every year 600,000 spectators come to admire the show.
