Enough to make you scream! Terrified California locals are calling cops over a creepy figure who’s been at crosswalks dressed as a Ghostface from slasher movies – only to discover it was a stunt for the latest installment in the series

  • Ghostface was near Sonoma Plaza at East First Street and East Napa St.
  • Sonoma Police were alerted to the suspect Monday
  • Upon investigating, police learned it was a publicity stunt by Paramount

Locals in California called police after seeing a sinister figure dressed as Scream Killer Ghostface ominously standing at a crosswalk in a quiet town.

The masked figure was spotted at the edge of a Sonoma crosswalk Monday.

They then crossed the street before running into the camera wearing the ghoul mask first seen at the 1996 premiere of the original Scream movie.

Unlike the films fictional Ghostface, this one did not wield a blade or slash anyone to death.

On Monday, Sonoma police were inundated with calls from terrified residents reporting a suspicious individual - dressed in a black hoodie and white mask - in the historic town square near First Street East and East Napa Street at Sonoma Plaza

But locals were still scared, fearing possible copycat crimes – with some calling the police.

Only then did they learn the truth; The character was part of a stunt devised to promote Scream 6, which hits theaters March 10.

When officers investigated, they learned that the person under the costume was nothing to fear but was there to promote the upcoming horror film.

In the past few weeks, Ghostface has been spotted in various cities across the country, including New Orleans, St. Louis and Sonoma, the stand-in for the film’s fictional town of Woodsboro.

Ghostface, who appears to be enjoying all the fuss, took to Twitter and told those panicking, “I was just minding my own business.”

The cult film follows a series of brutal murders in the sleepy town of Woodsboro and a Ghostface killer who targets a group of teenage victims.

Directed by Wes Craven, the slasher franchise launched in 1996 and starred Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courteney Cox, Matthew Lillard and Drew Barrymore.

Campbell resigned after Scream 5. Arquette and Barrymore’s characters were butchered by Ghostface himself – with Lillard’s character dying after being revealed to be Ghostface in the first film.

Cox remains one of the few original characters and will appear in Scream 6, in which the latest incarnation of Ghostface terrorizes New York City.

The first film in the franchise was filmed at the Sonoma Community Center, just a block from Sonoma Plaza.

The community center served as the high school in the film, and the original 1996 film was shot throughout the Bay Area.

Santa Rosa, Tomales, and Healdsburg were other California areas featured in the film.
