A YES Network cameraman was taken to a hospital after being hit by a miss during Wednesday’s game between the Yankees and Orioles at Yankee Stadium. Here’s what you need to know:
- The YES network posted an update on Twitter later on Wednesday, saying the cameraman Pete Stendel who was struck “is conscious and undergoing tests” in hospital.
- During the game, Stendel was hit in the head by a throw from Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson.
- The game was stopped and both teams left the field while medical staff tended to Stendel. YES Network play-by-play broadcaster Michael Kay said he was told Stendel spoke to medical staff.
- As Stendel left the field on a stretcher on a cart, he gave a peace sign to the crowd. Play eventually resumed and the Orioles defeated the Yankees 6-3.

With an out in the fifth inning, Anthony Volpe hit a grounder to second baseman Adam Frazier, who threw to second base for an out. Henderson then threw high over first base and the ball seemed to hit Stendel as he looked at his camera. Stendel fell to the ground after contact and kicked his legs.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said he’s “definitely praying for[Stendel].”
“It was nice to see him obviously coherent and raising his hand,” Boone said. “But I saw it pretty well straight away. It was very scary. I didn’t see him fall backwards but I knew what could have happened if he fell back and add to the impact of the speed the ball hit him. … Difficult scene there and I hope he’s fine.”
Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo said, “I hope he’s okay.”
“Any time a man goes down on the field or in the stands, it’s scary,” Rizzo said.
Kay called Stendel “a great, great guy.”
“We’re all sending him the best vibes possible,” Kay wrote on Twitter.
