Canada among nominees for today’s 95th Academy Awards

Ontario-born filmmakers Sarah Polley and James Cameron are competing in the Best Picture category for their respective feature films What They Say (Women Talking) and Avatar: The Way of the Water.

Polley is also in search of the most suitable screenplay for her portrayal of Miriam Toews’ 2018 novel What They Say.

In terms of performance, Canadian-American actor Brendan Fraser is nominated for Best Actor for his role in Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale.

Along with Judy Chin and Anne Marie Bradley, Montreal makeup artist Adrien Morot is also nominated for his work in makeup and hair for the same film.

Toronto filmmaker Domee Shi is in the competition for Best Animated Feature, Turning Red, while Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis from Calgary are nominated for Best Animated Short for The Flying Sailor.

Canada is also in the running for best documentary: Montreal’s Ina Fichman is among the nominated team for the Canadian-American film The Fire Within, as is Toronto director Daniel Roher for the documentary Navalny, about the poisoning of a political opponent in Russia.

Bryan Litson, who works at creative studio Framestore’s Vancouver offices, has entered a visual effects award for his work on Top Gun: Maverick, starring Ryan Tudhope, Seth Hill and Scott R. Fisher.

The 95th Academy Awards premieres Sunday night at 8 p.m. ET and will air in Canada on CTV.
