On Thursday, Canada’s federal government announced, citing national security, that it will ban two major Chinese telecom companies, Huawei and ZTE, from providing equipment and services for 4G and 5G networks in the country. The expected decision brings Canada in line with the position of the United States and other Western countries, which have excluded Huawei as a 5G network provider in recent years.
The Canadian government has announced that starting next September, Canadian communications companies will have to stop buying devices for 4G and 5G networks from Huawei and ZTE. Instead, they have a few years to remove the 4G and 5G devices the two companies have already bought.
