According to the police who shot the shooter, two people were killed and two others injured in a western Canadian town on Monday (July 25). “I can confirm that four people were shot dead by a suspected sniper,” Langley City Police Chief Ghalib Bhayani said at a news conference.

Two did not survive, he said, and one injured woman is in “critical condition.” The suspect was shot dead by the police. “Identification of the victims and the suspect is ongoing and we are trying to establish the link between them,” added police, who declined to reveal the identity of the individuals.

According to Canadian media, the man could have been homeless. Police are “trying to determine if (the victims) were actually homeless,” but have yet to confirm, said David Lee of the Homicide Investigation Squad.

Around 6:15 a.m. local time (3:15 p.m. French time), a public alert had been broadcast mentioning “several crime scenes in downtown Langley,” a town of 130,000 people about forty kilometers southeast of Vancouver, British Columbia.

Authorities said in that message they “had an interaction with a suspect without knowing at the moment if others were involved.” A second alert was broadcast an hour later, declaring that the suspect “no longer poses a threat” and again urging the public to stay away.
