Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Russian President Vladimir Putin “can only lose” after his surprise visit to Ukraine on Sunday.
In an interview with Reuters, Trudeau was asked what he would say to Putin ahead of Russia’s Victory Day, which commemorates Nazi Germany’s defeat in World War II. He replied that he saw only one result for the Russian leader.
“He inflicts atrocities on civilians and he’s doing it all because he thought he could win,” Canada’s prime minister said. “But he can only lose.”
“What Putin needs to understand is that the West is absolutely determined and determined to stand against what it is doing,” Trudeau added.
“His illegal war, his escalations, his crossing of red lines by deciding to invade Ukraine further means that we as a world will do whatever it takes to ensure he loses.”

Trudeau echoed the sentiment on Twitter Sunday night after a meeting with G7 leaders, which also included Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“Peace, justice and freedom reigned as World War II drew to a close,” the Prime Minister wrote on Twitter later Sunday night. “77 years later, we must once again defend these values and stand up against violent aggression – for Ukraine, for Europe and for the world.”
