Political Minute at the Cannes Film Festival. American actor Woody Harrelson spoke briefly about the war in Ukraine during a news conference this Sunday morning, drawing parallels between the violent Russian offensive and recent wars waged by the United States.
The Welcome to Zombieland actor is in Cannes to defend Swedish director Ruben Östlund’s film Without Filter (Triangle of Sadness in VO) in competition. He replied to reporters, accompanied by the filmmaker and the rest of the cast, when someone asked him what he thought of his character:
“The character is a Marxist and I’m an anarchist,” he said. “So in that sense we are different. I’m the kind of guy who finds it abhorrent for a superpower to attack a country like Iraq unprovoked with all its military might…er sorry Afghani…er, Vietnam…Korea…no sorry, Ukraine!”
So many countries that have been in conflict or occupied by the United States in the last 70 years.

We can also see in this speech a nod to George W. Bush’s embarrassing slip of the tongue in Dallas earlier this week. During a speech criticizing the invasion of Ukraine, the 43rd President of the United States mistakenly said “Iraq”…which he himself invaded in 2003.
“The result is the lack of a balance of power in Russia and a one-man decision to launch a totally unwarranted and brutal invasion of Iraq,” George W. Bush said, before shaking his head and correcting, “I mean, from the Ukraine…”
Unfiltered, he follows the passengers on a luxury cruise who see their comfortable lives threatened when a storm approaches.
