TO UPDATE: The program for the 75th Cannes Film Festival – as it stands so far, there are still additions – has been announced with 18 films in competition (see full list below). In the running are such returning Palme d’Or winners as Hirokazu Kore-eda, Cristian Mungiu, Ruben Ostlund and the Dardenne brothers.
Other well-known names who will be presenting new works in the competition include James Gray, Claire Denis, Park Chan-wook, Kelly Reichardt, Jerzy Skolimowski and, as expected, David Cronenberg.
In the rest of the official selection, George Miller’s Three Thousand Years Of Longing has been confirmed for an out-of-competition spot, while Ethan Coen is making an appearance in special screenings with Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble In Mind.
A total of 49 films have been announced today, including Michel Hazanavicius’ Z (Comme Z) aka Final Cut, which will open the festival out of competition on May 17th. The zombie comedy stars Bérénice Bejo and Romain Duris.
Below is the full list announced today and we’ll come back to it with a closer look and analysis.
PREVIOUS: After being muddled by the pandemic for the last two years – and just in time for its 75th anniversary – the Cannes Film Festival is finally returning to its regular May slot. And so this morning President Pierre Lescure and General Delegate Thierry Frémaux announce the program for the event at the Paris cinema UGC Normandie on the Champs-Elysées. (Scroll down for the full list as we update live.)
You can also watch the live stream here.
Starring titles already confirmed for a red carpet walk include Paramount/Skydance’s Tom Cruise sequel Top Gun: Maverick (with Cruise being particularly celebrated at the festival) and Warner Bros/Roadshows Elvis, the Elvis Presley Biopic by Baz Luhrmann that stars Austin Butler and Tom Hanks.
In a twist, there’s still no word on a jury president, nor do we yet know what will open proceedings on May 17 (the fest lasts through May 28).
Films generally believed to start from the Croisette include director George Miller’s Three Thousand Years Of Longing, starring Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton; and David Cronenberg’s Crimes Of The Future, starring Léa Seydoux, Kristen Stewart and Viggo Mortensen. Both filmmakers would return to Cannes.
As we revealed earlier this week, Disney/Pixar’s Lightyear is a film that will not be included, but has also been speculated to be part of the official selection. Similarly, David Lynch has brushed off suggestions that he has a new movie on the Riviera.
Check below for the lineup, which will be updated as films are announced:
