Cap Losses: How the 49ers Can Free Up Significant Cash

The 2022 NFL Scouting Combine is over, and ahead of the draft, NFL teams will have the opportunity to improve their performance by adding players during the free agency period. However, some teams will have to lay off players in order to hit the salary cap. The salary cap is expected to rise to $208.2 million, according to Spotrac.com. Some NFL teams have already released players, such as linebacker Kyle Van Noy of the New England Patriots and tight end Kyle Rudolph of the New York Giants. These two players are caps.

The San Francisco 49ers currently have 43 players under contracts and have spent $206.8 million, according to Spotrac.com. They have $2.95 million to pay after the league’s new year begins on March 16. The obvious way for the 49ers to make room in the cap is to trade or release players.

Let’s look at quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s contract. In 2022, he will earn $26.95 million. His dead cap is $1.4 million. If the 49ers trade him, they will trade his contract and the amount will be adjusted to the team’s salary cap. That money will give the 49ers some wiggle room when signing free agents and draft picks.

The 49ers have two players who could be potential victims. The first player is Garoppolo. The 49ers have the option to let him go for only $1.4 million. By eliminating Garoppolo’s paycheck, San Francisco will save about $25.5 million in pay caps. If the 49ers are looking for money to expand players like wide receiver Deebo Samuel and pass rusher Nick Boza, getting Garoppolo’s massive paycheck will go a long way in creating more cap space.

The second player is defender Samson Ebukam. The Los Angeles Rams selected Ebukam in the fourth round of the 2017 draft. The 49ers signed him to a two-year, $12 million contract. Ebucam is worth $8.25 million in 2022. The amount of the dead cap is $1.75 million. His release would save the 49ers $6.5 million. It may not be a lot of money, but every little thing matters.

By releasing those two players — or, in the case of Garoppolo, potentially trading them — the 49ers could start the 2022 season with more than $30 million. San Francisco has signaled that it is ready to move out of Garoppolo. In the 2021 draft, the 49ers traded with the Miami Dolphins to secure future quarterback Trey Lance.

As for Ebucam, it would be a pain to lose a lot of depth. However, this move would be a business move, nothing personal. The 49ers could have replaced Ebucam by drafting a much cheaper option and paying off that day later.

Will the 49ers have cap losses? Who would you consider?

Schefter: Jimmy Garoppolo to undergo shoulder surgery, QB 49ers attract ‘significant’ trading interest

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo suffered thumb and shoulder injuries while playing in the playoffs last season. He was expected to undergo surgery to repair a torn thumb ligament. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Garoppolo will also undergo shoulder surgery, which will see him miss it until the summer. He adds that the quarterback won’t get surgery on his thumb. Schefter adds that this latest development should not affect Garoppolo’s trading status as the 49ers are expected to trade the veteran quarterback this month. This does not mean that the operation will not affect Garoppolo’s trade.

‘It’s big money’: why John Lynch turned down a lucrative TV offer to stay with the 49ers

Amazon was looking for celebrity broadcasters to headline their upcoming Thursday Night Football broadcasts. They reportedly approached San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch, a former FOX broadcaster, about the opportunity. Lynch turned them down, opting to stay with the 49ers. On Wednesday, the general manager spoke to reporters at the NFL Scouts in Indianapolis. He was asked about the decision to turn down what was reportedly a lucrative offer and remain in charge of the NFL. “I got into this business because I was drawn to the opportunity to compete,” Lynch said. “I think we have a very good team and I think we have

Arden Key wants to return to 49ers ‘if the money is right’, praises Trey Lance

Defensive end Arden Key is among several San Francisco 49ers players who will move to free agency next week. Finally managing to avoid what he thought was a bad situation with the Las Vegas Raiders, Key had 6.5 sacks, 22 tackles, 5 tackles for a loss and 17 quarterback strikes in 17 games last season. All of them were career highs. The 49ers would probably like to see Key come back. This feeling is mutual. However, Key found himself in a good position and set himself up for a good salary. “I want to come back,” Key told fans during an Instagram Q&A (h/t TheSFNiners). “Damn, they must want me back. Well, they want me back. We have to see if the money is needed.” The Raiders made Key a third-round pick in the 2018 LSU Draft.

John Lynch: 49ers salary cap capable of carrying Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance in 2022

The NFL New Year begins March 16th. This is when teams must report the 51 highest paid players and meet the new salary cap. Most assume that the San Francisco 49ers will part ways with Jimmy Garoppolo, freeing up about $25 million in equity and allowing the team to not only keep some of their players, but possibly add some talent in the coming weeks. One complication arose this week. Garoppolo will undergo shoulder surgery that will take him out of the game for 16 weeks. This means that any interested team knows they won’t see him cast until late June or early July, which could be a deterrent. Does it bother the 49ers? “I
