Paramount+ has confirmed that iconic USS Enterprise Captain James Tiberius Kirk will return for Season 2 of Star Trek: Stranger New Worlds. Paul Wesley, best known for his roles in The Vampire Diaries, Amir & Sam, Medal of Honor and more, will take the captain’s chair during the filming of the second season of the Star Trek spin-off.
“Paul is a seasoned actor, amazing personality and a welcome key addition to the show,” read in part a statement attributed to Stranger New Worlds executive producer Alex Kurtzman and showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers via email. “Like the rest of us, he’s a longtime Star Trek fan and we’re excited about his interpretation of this iconic role.”
No further details about Kirk’s involvement with the series have been revealed, but just from the image above – Kirk as commander and with the captain’s rank insignia on the sleeves of his uniform – it definitely looks like by the end of the Strange New Worlds season’s debut, we’ll either be brushing up on Kirk’s command service to The Enterprise on other Starfleet ships or Captain Pike Anson Mount will no longer fly the Enterprise. If so, it remains to be seen if there will be a timeskip between seasons.
Pike commanded the Enterprise for 15 years, and as far as we know, Strange New Worlds, which takes place immediately after the events of the second season of Star Trek: Discovery, takes place in the year 2258, just eight years after his time in positions. Of course, we already knew what followed his crew – the famous five-year mission that was the goal of the original Star Trek television series. If we’re not going to be keeping an eye on the two Starfleet ships in Strange New Worlds, chances are the early days of Kirk’s captaincy on the Enterprise will play out onscreen, freshening up the very edges of the return of the original Star Trek. to life.
The first season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is set to begin on Paramount+ on May 5th.
