Car explosion: Rainbow Bridge still closed 24 hours later

At the start of a long Thanksgiving and Black Friday weekend, the Rainbow Bridge on the Canada-U.S. border was still closed Thursday, nearly 24 hours after a car explosion in Niagara Falls left two people dead and one injured.

As a result, passage at this border crossing remained closed on both the American and Canadian sides, according to the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission website. No reopening date has been communicated yet.

However, the Lewinston Queensway, Whirpool and Peace bridges were open after a brief closure on Wednesday afternoon.

Canadians heading to the U.S. on Thursday didn’t have to wait too long to cross, while the Lewinston-Queensway Bridge experienced no delay around midday and the Peace Bridge only experienced about 10 minutes.

The day before, around 11:30 a.m., a car arriving at full speed at the border crossing from the USA exploded. New York State Governor Kathy Hochul quickly ruled out the possibility of an attack.
