Two people were seriously injured in a violent traffic accident on Rue du Portage in Caraquet on Thursday around 5 p.m. The accident involved a van and a car, which RCMP initial observations indicated was due to speed.
The car, driven by a young woman aged 21, crossed the center line and crashed into a van driven by a 70-year-old man coming in the opposite direction.
The driver and a 22-year-old man who was accompanying them were seriously injured and taken to Bathurst Hospital. The nature of the passenger's injuries then required his transfer to Moncton.
According to Sergeant Pierre Chiasson of the Tracadie RCMP detachment, who reported the matter to Acadie Nouvelle on Saturday, the two young people were in stable condition.
“We are not afraid for their lives.”
The driver of the van only suffered minor injuries.
“He was treated for minor injuries but was not transported to the hospital,” the official said.
The three people involved in the accident all come from the Caraquet region.
The car of the two young occupants was so badly damaged that the fire department had to free them with rescue pliers.
The vehicles were towed and are being analyzed to determine whether a mechanical failure was the cause of the accident, Sergeant Chiasson added.
The investigation has not yet been completed, but according to initial findings, alcohol does not play a role.
