A technical defect forced the crew of a cargo plane to turn back. However, the landing did not go as planned – the plane simply broke apart.
A DHL cargo plane skidded off the runway and broke in two as it landed at San Jose International Airport on Thursday. The crew was not injured and the airport was subsequently closed.
According to the fire department, the Boeing 757 had taken off from Juan Santamaría Airport, west of the Costa Rican capital, but decided to return after a failure in the hydraulic system was discovered. On landing, the plane skidded, flipped and broke apart, exposing the cargo.
DHL spokesman Daniel McGrath said the company is working with airport authorities to relocate the plane so operations can resume. An investigation is being carried out to determine the cause of the incident.
