The number 1 tennis player in the world, Carlos Alcaraz, decided not to take part in the group stage of the Davis Cup with Spain on Saturday his defeat in the semifinals of the US Open against Russian Daniil Medvedev.
The experienced Albert Ramos (35 years old, 88th player in the world) will replace Alcaraz at the Games, which will take place in Valencia from September 12th to 17th, the Spanish Tennis Federation said in a press release.
In the absence of Rafael Nadal, Alcaraz was expected to lead the Spanish team and in particular to face his Serbian rival Novak Djokovic, whom he beat in a thrilling final at Wimbledon in July.
Spain will also face the Czech Republic and South Korea in the group stage and aim to qualify for the round of 16, which takes place in Malaga from November 21-26.
