CBC/Radio-Canada's budget will increase to $1.4 billion in 2024-25

CBC/Radio-Canada's budget continues to rise, despite loud protests from leaders who said last year they would have to cut jobs because of future cuts.

Funding for the public broadcaster is increasing to $1.4 billion from $1.3 billion, the Trudeau government confirmed Thursday.

The 3.3 percent budget cut imposed on federal agencies and ministries will not apply to the state corporation.

The head of the CBC announced three weeks before Christmas that 800 jobs would be cut, particularly because of the budgetary efforts she was demanding from the federal government.

At the time, Ottawa argued that Ms. Tait was moving too quickly because no cuts had been officially announced.

On Thursday, Treasury President Anita Anand reiterated that Ms. Tait's exit was “premature.”

“We know it’s difficult for them right now,” said Anita Anand. That’s why we have decided not to reduce funding for CBC/Radio-Canada.”

“Not enough”

CBC/Radio-Canada continues to plan to cut jobs. The broadcaster believes that the exemption from which it benefits is welcome, “but [que] It won’t be enough.”

“We are still under significant budgetary pressure,” CBC/Radio-Canada media director Leon Mar said in an email exchange with Le Journal.

“These pressures arise from the same structural factors that affect all Canadian media, including rising production costs, declining television advertising revenues and intense competition from digital giants.”

At the time of writing, Le Journal had not yet been able to obtain a response from the Radio-Canada Workers' Union.
