CCM, oppressive and scattered rain under very hot and humid air

This Thursday in Porto Alegre at dawn there was the feeling of being in a capital in the northeast of Brazil, with sun, stuffy air, temperatures above 25 ° C in some neighborhoods and isolated heavy clouds causing rain. That was the feeling of stuffy, humid air.

The image from the GOES16 meteorological satellite showed a mesoscale convection complex over northeast Argentina. It is the second dawn in a row with a CCM acting in the midlatitudes of South America. Yesterday, another such system brought extreme amounts of rain of up to 150 mm to 200 mm to parts of central and western Argentina in just a few hours Uruguay.

A mesoscale convective complex (known in meteorology by the acronym CCM) is a collection of storms occurring on a scale of tens to hundreds of kilometers, a common phenomenon that forms at night during the hot months of the year in northeastern Argentina, Paraguay.

Such convection complexes are characterized by an organized structure that can include several interconnected individual convection cells and often appear circular on satellite images.

CCMs are often associated with largescale weather systems such as fronts, squalls, or low pressure systems and can produce intense rainfall with highs, thunderstorms, hail, and in some cases severe storms with gales.

This type of formation occurs in very hot, humid and unstable air masses, just like the air mass that currently covers Rio Grande do Sul and the neighboring country, favoring intense heat with a lot of stuffiness and instability.

Therefore, this Thursday, Rio Grande do Sul will once again have a very hot, humid day with sun and rain in several regions. The atmosphere is so hot, humid and unstable that any passing cloud can bring rain. Therefore, rainfall tends to be very irregularly distributed and it does not rain in all cities.

The sun will shine accompanied by clouds in the state this Thursday, but there will be greater cloud cover in Rio Grande do Sul. Rain is expected mainly in parts of the northwest, west, center and south of Rio Grande do Sul, but rainfall will be poorly distributed. In the west there is a risk of heavy to intense rain in isolated areas. In other areas, any instability is local and temporary.

It will be hot in the state of Rio Grande do Sul this Thursday, but clouds will prevent further warming in some regions. The heat will be stronger again in the greater Porto Alegre area and in the valleys and parts of the northwest, where maximum temperatures are expected to be between 33°C and 35°C in most cities, but above 35°C in some places.
