BUENOS AIRES, 24th January (RHC) Argentine President Alberto Fernández on Tuesday urged the countries of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) to end the blockades unilaterally imposed on Cuba and Venezuela.

In his briefing before handing over the bloc’s temporary presidency, the Argentine President recalled that he was directly committed to “ending the blockades that Latin American countries are still suffering”.

“I am certain that I asked all the forums to end the blockades,” said Fernández, recalling that at the 2022 Summit of the Americas he had called for respect for Latin American nations.

“The blockades are a very perverse method of sanctioning not the governments but the people and that is why we cannot allow them to continue. Cuba has been under a blockade for more than six decades and that is unforgivable. Venezuela is suffering as much as we are raising our voices,” said the Argentine President.

Fernández said Celac must not only raise his voice to demand a cessation of these actions, but also work to ensure and strengthen “the institutional framework” and unity of the region, especially since the bloc is now complete with the return is from Brazil. . “The opportunity to unite the region is a necessity imposed on us and we must achieve it,” he added.
